Great North Spartans

News from the Great North Run, First Saturday of the Month and Bedford.

GREAT NORTH SPARTANS

Seven Spartans ran the Great North Run. ANDREW JORDAN with 1 hour 44 minutes 40 seconds was not quite as fast as he’d hoped but, given how hot it was at the start, quite content. KAREN PALMER totally loved the day, ran a personal worst and wants to run again next year.

The magnificent seven’s times were Andrew Jordan, 4140th in 1:44:40; TRACEY STILES, 20,522nd in 2:15:09; Karen Palmer, 22,486th in 2:18:37; HADRIAN COOPER 26,155th in 2:25:19; KATE ELPHICK, 32,015th in 2:38:00; SARAH WILLIAMS 35,882nd in 2:49:59 and SCOTT ROUSE 37,929th in 3:00:02.

Second for Barry at Bedford

Super Vet BARRY OSBORNE was second in his category in the Bedford Harriers 10K race on Sunday. He was second vet (60 plus) and 48th overall in 40 minutes 33 seconds, less than a minute behind the first vet winner.

HAYLEY FAULKNER ran the 6.2 miles in 51:49. She was 165th out of the 286 finishers.

Second On First Saturday

Five Spartans enjoyed the First Saturday of the Month 5km event on Norton Common, Letchworth. 

JOHN HARRIS was the fastest Spartan finishing eighth with a sub 20 time of 19 minutes 43 seconds. Madeleine Pritchard was the second fastest woman in the event finishing 18th overall with a great time of 21 minutes 12 seconds for what is essentially a trail race.

DANIEL BATES finished up his preparations for the Interlaken 4.2km race in Switzerland on the 12th September by finishing 21st with a time of 21:31. TRACY PEZ was third woman and 28th in 22:27. CRAIG BACON was 38th in 22:59.

Chiltern Off Road

In the Chiltern Off Road Marathon participants follow written instructions provided to follow the course rather than being directed by marshals, and as well as the usual L/R meaning left/right and FP=footpath, on this run Up MEANS UP!, with just over 3,000 feet of ascent in this year’s course, which for 2014 also took in the Village of Dibley location at Turnville.

In the full marathon Spartans TRICIA HOPPER, KAREN LIDDLE and BARRY KING finished together in 7 hours 3 minutes 40 seconds while Sharon Crowley fast-walked the 26.4 mile route in 7:48:33. PAUL HOLGATE completed a 21.6 mile option in 6:24:44 while MIKE CROWLEY fast walked the same route in 6:36:00.

Stevenage Marathon and Half Marathon

Get Sunday 2nd November in your diary. The Stevenage Marathon is only organised every ten years and it takes place this Autumn. The annual half marathon will be on the same day.

Join The Spartans

Live in or near  Stevenage? Like running? Spartans is your local running club and is on the up! The club was voted the ’s Best Running Club in 2010. It now has hundreds of members and encourages participation by all. The Spartans have a varied training programme to suit those who want to run 5 kilometres through to full marathons.

The Spartans weekday training sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Go along to the new sports centre at Marriotts School, (SG2 8UT) at 7p.m. Up to five running groups go out on training nights – there will be one to suit you!

The Spartan Starter group starts from Marriotts at 7.30p.m. every Monday (except public holidays) and 7p.m. every Thursday.

Most long Sunday morning training sessions start 9.00a.m. sharp. Spartan track training sessions are held at Ridlins Athletics Track, Woodcock Road, most Saturdays from 9.15a.m. There are events to enter every Sunday. Newcomers are very welcome – those who have not done very much running yet might prefer to start with a Thursday, Saturday or Monday session.

Try a few sessions before joining. Membership is only ÂŁ35 per year, ÂŁ25 without UKA membership. Concessions are available. Membership forms are available on the Spartans website www.fvspartans.org.uk Please ask if you would like a paper copy.
