Fast 5K

JONATHAN PARR’s new 5K Fairlands Valley Spartans club record is 15 minutes 57 seconds.

Royal Parks Virtually
On Sunday CRAIG BACON ran the Royal Parks Half virtually around Stevenage.  Since it was still not possible to hold the main event in London, over 3000 runners followed their own routes wherever they were to complete the 13.1 miles.
People were encouraged to run through as many green spaces as possible, so Craig ran through Shephalbury Park, Fairlands Valley Park, the Town Centre Park, King George V playing fields and Bury Mead.
The weather was ideal on Sunday morning for running, dry and around 8 degrees.  Craig had two pace makers to help him around, Moira Morley and Steve Cook, and he was very pleased to post a time of 1:42:30 to come 267th overall and raise over £600 for local charity Phase, who work with children and young people in Hitchin promoting wellbeing and resilience

Racing Round England
In the virtual race around England the Fairlands Valley Spartans team have already covered a total of 15,781.4 kilometres and are now scattered between Cornwall and Tyneside.
Team leader PENNY SCHENKEL is in North Shields having run, walked or cycled 2008 kilometres.  She is more than two thirds of the way round the event.
Despite the closure of the bridge JIM BROWN has made it across the Humber and is in Hornsea on the way to Bridlington with 1805 kilometres down.
Meanwhile third placed BRIAN WHITE is at Miami Beach.  No, not that one, he’s in Lincolnshire on 1677 kilometres.
SHARON CROWLEY has reached Mundesley in Norfolk with her 1466 kilometres and HAZEL SMITH, fifth, is in Margate, Kent on 1134.  The other Spartans over 1,000 kilometres are CATHY CRAIG 1097, KEN JUDE 1068 and LIZ CROWLEY 1032.

Fly 5K #47
The return to group training certainly did not do PENNY SCHENKEL any harm as she took another 53 seconds off her Fly 5K personal best and finished Saturday’s event in 27 minutes 59 seconds.  JIM BROWN finished with the same time.
NICK KLEANTHOUS was the fastest Spartan with 25:37 and PAUL HOLGATE came in with 36:52.
The virtual Fly races started during lock down to help keep people active.

(Not) Parkrun
In addition to those using the same effort to record Fly 5K times on Saturday JIM BROWN recorded 27 minutes 26 seconds the following day so that gave him a (not) parkrun time. .
(Not) Parkruns can be run on any day of the week.

Group Runs Are Back
The return to club training went really well helped by some glorious evenings.  Members have to book in advance to keep the numbers within Covid guidance and there are several starts at different places around Stevenage.
