20s PLENTY FOR ED

ED HARE ran the Goodwood Running Grand Prix on Sunday morning.  It consisted of 5k, 10k, Half Marathon, 20 miles or Marathon distances.  He took on the 20 mile challenge as a training run towards the Peterborough Marathon next month and came away with a 2 hours 48 minutes 51 seconds time which was a personal best (PB) by over 3 minutes.  Ed said it was a fantastic event with almost 1000 competitors and certainly the largest attended event since the pandemic started that he’d seen.

He added, “Runners were sent off socially distanced and in fours and there were staggered starts all morning for all the different events.  It felt very safe around the event village and certainly gives you confidence that larger events can happen this year.  The strangest part of the morning was light aircraft taking off and landing in the middle of the track, but certainly helped taking the attention away from how my legs were.”

For Real – a Half Marathon

Jim halfThe half marathon was always a favourite distance for JIM BROWN and on Saturday he was able to run the first real one this year.  Organised by Run Through this was 0.1 miles plus thirteen laps of the cycling circuit in the Lee Valley Olympic Park.  There were plenty of turns and sharp little inclines but at least with only one mile per loop the headwind stretches didn’t last too long.

Jim was keen to tick off every mile at just under nine minutes which, having made great use of the Spartans steady five training session to practice, he did to finish in 1 hour 52 minutes 23 seconds.  He was the last runner across the start line in the phased starting arrangements but with his steady pace caught a few and ended up in the middle of the finishers and second in his age category.  There were over 200 finishers.

Rock Up ‘n’ Race

Six months after their last Rock Up ‘n’ Run race along the River Lea towpath from Stanstead St Margarets Paul Holgate and Roger Biggs returned to join the fun organised by Fordy Runners.  Paul beat his October time by 11 minutes 38 seconds, finishing the half marathon in 2:37:48, while Roger was pleased to complete the 10k event in 1:31:50, only slightly slower than his October time despite the chilly headwind to contend with this time.

Sunday 25th April: Big Cow Formula 5 Duathlon

A normal duathlon is run-bike-run but the Big Cow Formula 5 Duathlon was run-bike-run-bike-run.  Hence the Formula 5 name.  The run was 5K on mainly an off-road undulating course in Emberton Country Park.  The bike was 40K on roads, around Newport Pagnell which was again undulating, and there was quite a stiff breeze.  BRIAN WHITE entered to test out his endurance fitness and it’s obviously not that bad!  He was second veteran 65 plus and 49th overall in 2 hours 37 minutes 33 seconds.

Racing Round England

In their race around England ten of the fourteen Fairlands Valley Spartans have completed more than 1,000 kilometres and team leader PENNY SCHENKEL is already pushing the headwind down the west coast.  She is approaching Fleetwood, northern terminus of the Blackpool Tramways with 2,378 kilometres done.  Penny has a lead of more than 300 kilometres within the Spartans and is eighth overall in the national competition.

Early leader BRIAN WHITE is third and making good progress with 1,875 kilometres and has reached Cloughton in North Yorkshire.  Fourth placed SHARON CROWLEY is in Wainfleet St Mary, near Skegness and Gibraltar (!) with 1642 kilometres.

JON SYPULA ON 1,100 IS COMING THROUGH Deal in Kent.  He’s 13 kilometres ahead of LIZ CROWLEY who is in Dover.  PAUL HOLGATE is the latest Spartan through 1,000 kilometres.  He’s on 1,064 and between Dymchurch and Hythe near the narrow gauge stream railway.

Alexander Palace 10K

SUZY HAWKINS said the Alexander Palace 10K was on a ridiculously difficult course, extremely steep hills, off road sections, but the sun was shining and the views over London from the top were spectacular.  It was wonderful to be out racing.  The Covid secure measures were good.

Suzy was aiming for the club women 45 plus club record 43:16, but missed by one second with 43:17 so she will have to try again.  She was third female, and first in age

AMAZING YUKO

It’s confirmed, Fairlands Valley Spartans YUKO GORDON is a national record holder!  Full details can be found in Athletics Weekly by following the link below:

Fast 5K

JONATHAN PARR’s new 5K Fairlands Valley Spartans club record is 15 minutes 57 seconds.

Royal Parks Virtually
On Sunday CRAIG BACON ran the Royal Parks Half virtually around Stevenage.  Since it was still not possible to hold the main event in London, over 3000 runners followed their own routes wherever they were to complete the 13.1 miles.
People were encouraged to run through as many green spaces as possible, so Craig ran through Shephalbury Park, Fairlands Valley Park, the Town Centre Park, King George V playing fields and Bury Mead.
The weather was ideal on Sunday morning for running, dry and around 8 degrees.  Craig had two pace makers to help him around, Moira Morley and Steve Cook, and he was very pleased to post a time of 1:42:30 to come 267th overall and raise over £600 for local charity Phase, who work with children and young people in Hitchin promoting wellbeing and resilience

Racing Round England
In the virtual race around England the Fairlands Valley Spartans team have already covered a total of 15,781.4 kilometres and are now scattered between Cornwall and Tyneside.

Awards

While they couldn’t hold their presentation evening and dinner due to pandemic restrictions past chair Sophie Cowan chased around Stevenage to make sure four special awards were presented.

She said, “Whilst 2020 was a year that many will want to forget, there were some amazing club achievements.  Here are a few highlights – this is not an exhaustive list!

Ashley King, Brian and TimMichelle Reeves, Gail Mackie, Suzy Hawkins and Ella May Hard completed their marathon relay in 2:54:43 in April 2020 with the handovers streamed for us to watch.

Jonathan Parr broke the club 5K record at the Milton Keynes 5K in March 2020, recording a time of 16 minutes 35 seconds.

All the members who contributed miles to the marathons of the world!

Without further ado, the award winners for the year were:

Starter of the Year           Steph Biggar

Steph started running in lockdown 1 and completed the couch to 5k in her garden! Since joining FVS, Steph has become a regular at Monday, Tuesday and Thursday sessions. Steph clearly loves her running and that enthusiasm is contagious. Congratulations Steph.

Chair’s Award                    Jim Brown

Jim has been an FVS member since 1992.  He has been Press Officer since 1996, 25 years, and first joined the Committee in the last century.  Jim has been involved in coaching and leading groups for many years and got his first coaching qualification in 2010.  Jim’s commitment to the club is apparent. Over the lockdown, Jim has worked tirelessly to keep a flow of Spartan news in the press – no easy task.  Thank you for your commitment to FVS Jim.

This year’s Head Coach award goes to Tim for all his work on IT and coaching groups behind the scenes.

Spartan of the Year            Brian White

The 2020 Spartans’ Spartan of the Year is very well deserved. Thank you for all the planning behind the scenes involved in getting the pod sessions back up and running and for posting daily challenges and keeping everyone motivated over lock down 1, 2 and 3!

Due to the very disrupted race calendar the 2020 and 2021 club championships will be combined.
