John Harlow – Committee Member

John has been a Spartans groupie for 18 years and has spent many hours standing in the sun and rain marshalling and supporting his wife Beverley. After 35 years working mostly as a Community Psychiatric Nurse he took early retirement and now works part time at Heathcote School as a Mentor and Pastoral Assistant.

His interests are walking, cycling, bridge and always remembering to say “good run”. Being obsessed with ‘negative splits’ and ‘mile times’ he leaves to other as he is unable to run due to a long standing knee injury.

Simon Harris – Committee Member

Simon has been a member of the Spartans for three years and has brought a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm to training and has over come his physical disabilities to compete in races, achieving great success on the track at National, Regional and County level.

In 2008 Simon reached the finals of the National Disabled Athletics Championships and won multiple Gold Medals at the Eastern Region Championships.

2009 was a fantastic year for Simon. At the start of the year Simon won the Paul Pearce Disability Award at the Comet Sports Award. Then during the year Simon also won 2 Silvers and a Bronze (200M, 4 x 100M, and 4 x 400M respectively) in the National Championships for Disabled Athletes and Gold, 2 Silvers and a Bronze (400M, 100M, Long Jump and 200M respectively) at the Eastern Region Disabled Athletics Championships. At County level Simon won Gold in the 100M at the Hertfordshire Disabled Track Championships.

Liam Herbert – Club Coach

Liam joined the Spartans in March 2009 after attending a Starter Group session, and he hasn’t looked back since!

Completely un-sporty in his younger years, a desire to improve his fitness got him out jogging whilst studying at University in 2006, but his love for running was ignited the following year when he entered his first 10K race and got overtaken by Paula Radcliffe halfway around (yes, this really did happen!). Since joining the club as a way to further improve his running, Liam has enjoyed throwing himself into the many weekly training sessions on offer, and in particular he enjoys the Saturday track and speed-work sessions.

2011 was pretty good for Liam after he completed his debut marathon in 3 hours and 18 minutes, setting 11 independent PBs along the way in all distances from 1500m to half marathon. Liam was delighted to be named ‘Most Improved Male’ and ‘Spartan of the Year’ at the end of it!

Liam is possibly most well-known in the club for his striking appearance … well, mainly his short spiky hair, long legs, dodgy fashion trends and a worrying fearlessness for wearing lycra!

Liam joined the coaching team in 2012 to give back, encourage others and to look good in an orange vest! He is our social media expert, looking after the club Twitter account (@FVSpartans — followed by 400 people), and he is also the club race promoter.

Outside of running, Liam is currently training to become a librarian. His interests include films, technology, good food, exploring new places and riding roller coasters.

Steve Smithson – Club Coach

Steve started running in 1994 and joined the Spartans in 1995, his main reason for running being to stay fit and keep the weight off.  Running with the Spartans meant Steve started to train properly and soon found himself entering anything up to a half marathon. Like most people he achieved some quick gains in the first two years and won the most improved Spartan award. After lots of hard work he managed to achieve all the running targets & times he had set himself.

Steve doesn’t think his running is exceptional, but it is consistent and Steve has found it very fulfilling to make the Spartan team at many events.  Having (not that!) recently turned 40 he feels it is time to let the younger club members take up the mantle.

Steve joined the committee in 2008, but before then he was always keen to help the club at the many of the events we put on.

The one question that Steve is always asked is ‘when are you going to run the marathon?’  Steve says ‘having managed to avoid it for 12yrs his instinct is to avoid it for a few more!’

Katrina Doyle – Club Coach

Katrina joined the Spartans in the summer of 2006. She initially joined only for company on training runs when her training partner moved away, and never expected to enjoy being a club member so much.  Prior to joining the Spartans she had run the London marathon twice. Despite vowing never to run a marathon again, she has finally succumbed and plans to run another marathon (Edinburgh) in 2009, and to enjoy the Club camaraderie of training with a large group.

Katrina was elected to the Committee in 2007 and was Race Director for the Relays in 2008. She is also a level 2 Endurance Coach, and has a particular interest in coaching complete novices to running.  Katrina, along with Tessa, set up the very successful Spartans Starter Group in April 2008. The Starter group has continued to go from strength to strength and the group now meets twice weekly, on a Monday and Thursday evening.

Away from the Spartans, Katrina is an Accountant working for the NHS, is a regular attendee at a local gym and likes to read to relax.

Tessa Stephenson – Committee Member & Club Coach

Tessa joined the Spartans in 1994 after moving from Hampshire to Stevenage to be with her boyfriend (now husband) Dave. She belonged (and still does) to City of Portsmouth Athletic Club where she was Hampshire County champion for 800m for 4 years consecutively. Tessa wanted to carry on her running and having run 10K’s, 10 Miles and Half Marathons, completed marathons in November 1994, running the Stevenage Marathon, and then the London Marathon in 2000 when she was forty and had been in the sport for 26 years. She has been a regular County Medal winner in Hertfordshire and competes on both track and road.

Having loved the atmosphere at the Spartans, Tessa decided to become a coach in 2000 to help her fellow members. She introduced different types of training including track sessions and the odd track race including relays! She also encouraged members to have a go at doing more cross country races and got mens and ladies teams out in both the Southern Counties and National Cross Country championships for the first time. Tessa along with Katrina Doyle has started the Club’s first ‘Starter Group’ encouraging complete novices to have a go to walk/run on Monday nights. Tessa is also team manager for the women’s track and field team in the Eastern Veteran Athletic Club League in which the ladies won the final at Bedford.

Away from running, Tessa works for a firm who deal with the maintenance of the roads in Hertfordshire.
In her spare time Tessa likes to read and make various puddings.

Paul Holgate – Committee & Club Coach

Now in his 50’s Paul joined the Spartans in 1985 at 28 shortly after the club was formed following regular Sunday morning training runs that led up to the first Stevenage marathon in 1983.

A level 2 UKA qualified coach, Paul is also the Midweek League results secretary and club statistician for club championships and personal best records, as well as issuing monthly individual training plans for all 400+ members that he holds any data on which to base targets for.

Jo Laing – Coach

Jo joined FVS in 2008 having been a Joey-n-mates until then! Having taken up running in the early 90`s in response to a puncture heavy relationship with her bike, she soon realised that running was a far more reliable companion.(Sorry bike! I still love you!!)
Within a few months of joining, she knocked over 20 mins off her Marathon time. More importantly, she discovered that running is an adaptable pastime-solo or with friends and got the incurable bug.
Now a Coach in the Club, Jo loves the esprit de cours……and dreadful jokes that being in the Club offers.
She just LOVES running……………..end of……

Andy Neatham – Coach

Q. When did you join the club?
A. September 2010

Q. Why did you join the club?
A. We had just moved to Knebworth from High Wycombe and were looking for a running club with a good social side.

Q. Why did you join the coaching team?
A. I have twenty years experience of club running, with Barnet & District AC and Reading AC, and am a qualified scuba diving instructor. Those two things made it seem a natural thing to do.

Q. What are you hoping to do through your involvement in the coaching team?
A. Pass on some experience and enthusiasm at the same time as learning some new things myself.

Q. When do we typically see you at training?
A. When I’m not injured! My legs have a lot of miles in them and are not as young as they were!

Q. What are your aims in 2012 for your running and/or coaching?
A. Stay injury free so that I can actually join in with coaching and training. If successful with that I’d like to set a few VPBs (Veteran Personal Bests).

Q. Tell us something about you that other Spartans will not know!
A. I’m a Shetlander so there are not many that can accuse me of being a soft southerner!

Jim Brown – Press Officer, Committee Member & Club Coach

E-mail: press@fvspartans.org.uk

Jim Brown joined the Spartans shortly after moving to Stevenage from Scotland late in 1992.  He arrived with a pretty good record as a racing cyclist having achieved targets like “under the hour” for a 25 (miles), over 20 mph for a “twelve” (hours) and getting into the national rankings.  Gradually his number shifted from his backside to his chest for competitive sport but he is on the national council of the largest cyclists’ organisation in the country and still organises a number of successful cycling events including “Emitremmmus Desrever” which attracted 419 riders in October 2011.

Jim returned to the committee in 2009 but has been Spartan press officer for many years having first been elected to that post in 1996.  He was delighted to receive a special award at the Silver Jubilee Gala Ball.

Jim is a great believer in encouraging more people to get into active recreation — loads of health and social benefits — something Fairlands Valley Spartans have been doing really well.  His personal targets have been to try to achieve a 75% score in all eight club championship distances — particularly using the older, harder standards.  He’s come close a few times but lacks the oompf for the short stuff.

Recently he’s been advised to become a fun runner, we’ll see about that, but he reckons now is a good time to put a little bit more into the club which has given him so much pleasure and motivated him to attempt to get fit.

Jim qualified as an assistant coach in 2010, a Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) in 2011 and is now a UKA Level 2a Endurance Official.

Stephanie Mayfield

Email: secretary@fvspartans.org.uk

Steph spent so much time contemplating whether or not to join Spartans, that in January 2010 she was given her membership and a stripey vest by husband Steve.

Who knew then that within two years she would become Club Secretary in December 2011.

Since joining her running has improved in style and speed — still not fast, but noticeably faster!

Steph takes part in occasional races but is always determined to try her hardest and aim to better her times.

She has been a member of FVS Ladies team for Eastern Vets Athletics Club (EVAC) for the last two seasons.

She supplements her running training (normally Tuesday nights and Saturday track session) with personal training and gym sessions and occasional coaching from Stevenage and North Herts AC for pole vaulting and throwing skills (hammer and discus).

Steph is a radiographer working for University College London Hospitals which allows her to practice speed walking for EVAC and sprints along Euston Road, depending how late she is for the train!  She enjoys running because it enables her to get some fresh air, see daylight (a rarity in her job) and eat more!

Paul Marshall – Committee Member

Email: committee@fvspartans.org.uk

Paul joined FVS in 2010, but his first taste for running was way back in 1986 when he ran the Mars London Marathon in 3hrs 36mins. Then after a 23 year absence from road running he was once again was fortunate enough to gain a ballot place in the 2009 Flora London marathon which he ran somewhat slower!

The following years were possibly the busiest of Paul’s life with not only running more marathons but also getting married, buying and managing a business and getting a puppy. Paul is still the Managing Director of QES Ltd, husband of Vivienne Honey and father to Toffee but life has calmed down a bit these days which has given Paul more time to concentrate on his running and being a committee member! Oh and his goal of breaking that 4 hour barrier for the marathon again !!

Cross Country – Royston – 19 February 2012

It’s never an easy place to go to (acknowledgements to Harry Redknapp for the quote).

You will have seen emails over the past few weeks about the Cross Country League Fixtures. These races are primarily team events with 8 men required to make a team, and 4 ladies.

Unfortunately, we have struggled recently to get a good number of Spartans to participate, so this is a direct appeal to give it a try at Royston – you never know you might like it! Put the 19th February 2012 in your diary now!

Good Things About Running Cross-Country Races

  • It is very, very good for you – building up strength, stamina and overall fitness
  • If you want it to be competitive, you can race as hard as you like. BUT it is also perfectly acceptable to treat it as a slow, sociable training run – lots of people are there just to jog round and there is absolutely no pressure!
  • There is a real spirit about running team events like this – you are doing it for yourself, but also for your team-mates and for the Club
  • You can wear lots and lots of warm clothing to keep out the effects of the weather – people run in hats, scarves, gloves, leggings, tracksuit bottoms, ear muffs – the lot! The only mandatory thing is that you wear a club vest on top of everything else!
  • You see some really good scenery – the Royston event is run across the Heath and it really makes a pleasant change from the cycle ways of Stevenage!
  • When you have finished, you will have a warm glow of satisfaction for the rest of the day!

So, if you think you might want to give it a try, then let us know by either replying to this email and I will add you to the list or add your name to the thread on the forum at http://forum.fvspartans.org.uk/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1307118016). If you are unsure about anything, no matter how silly you feel your question might be, just ask any of the coaching team and they will be happy to help.

Full details on the Royston event below. The good thing about Royston is that it is not far too travel and it is never very wet or muddy (unlike some cross-country courses!). Yes, it is pretty hilly but if you want to walk up the hills – that’s absolutely fine. You definitely will not be the only one to do that!

Royston Details

The fourth Sunday League race for this season in on Sunday 19th February 2012.
The event will be hosted by Royston Runners and will be held on Therfield Heath, Royston.

The Race HQ will be The Heath Sport Centre, Baldock Road, Royston, SG8 5BG. The Centre has ample changing and showering facilities. It also has a licensed bar that serves food.

The race starts at 10.30am. The course is mostly across open downland and is hilly. It is suitable for spikes, studs or trail shoes.

Travel: Car there is plenty of car parking on the Heath. I suggest meeting at Sainsburys Coreys Mill to leave at 9:00 if you want to car share.
