BECKY AND LINDA WIN BRYAN MOORE AND PAUL MAGUIRE RACES

Fairlands Valley Spartans had an early start for their Paul Maguire Handicap 5 mile and Brian Moore Handicap 10 mile races in Stevenage on Sunday morning.  BECKY RAYNER and LINDA GEORGE were the main winners.

It was cold and misty particularly at the north end of the course but there were some excellent times with Rebecca Rayner winning the Paul Maguire trophy in a new 5 mile personal best (PB) time of 55 minutes 33 seconds (55:33), 4:07 quicker than her previous PB and a massive 12:57 better than handicap.

Second to finish was Amanda Vickers in her first 5 mile race with a time of 54:38, 5:22 better than handicap and third was Jane Wadey in 1:00:05, 4:23 ahead of handicap.  Jon Sypula was first man in the five miles with 49:39, 2:07 quicker than handicap, with Danny Scanlon second man, 1:18 better than handicap in a SB 34:13, and Tony Vickers third man with a new PB of 39:12 on his birthday.  Fastest runner was Simon Jackson in 29:58, with Danny Scanlon’s 34:13 second quickest and Charlie Arnold’s season’s best (SB) 36:20 third fastest.  Alison Wood was the fastest woman in 38:31, with Carole Sheldrick second quickest in 44:43 and Claire Pullen third fastest in 44:58.

Linda George was the winner of the Brian Moore Handicap 10 mile shield in a new PB time of 1:33:32, 2:28 quicker than handicap, with Ann Tryssesoone second lady equalling her season’s best (SB) time of 1:31:27, 1:33 ahead of handicap and Alice Welch 3rd lady in her first 10 mile in 1:34:40. Ralph Dadswell was first man (2nd overall) in a new SB time of 1:08:08, 2:22 quicker than handicap, with Matt Clarke second man in 1:36:10 and Simon Sypula third man in 1:36:07.

Fastest 10 mile time of the day was Ralph’s 1:07:08 with Ross Gallagher second quickest in 1:10:00 despite running half a mile further than intended and Keith Hooker third fastest in 1:14:21.  Ann Tryssesoone’s 1:31:27 was the fastest female time with Jayne Riddell second quickest in 1:33:01 and Linda George’s 1:33:32 third fastest.  There were 40 runners.

The events pay tribute to Paul Maguire, who won the Spartan of the Year award prior to his passing in 2008 at the age of 42 after a long battle with cancer and Bryan Moore a founding member of Fairlands Valley Spartans who passed away in the 1980s.  The event raised funds for the club’s charity of the year – the Willow Foundation.

A massive thanks to Paul Holgate for organising; to Tracy Pez, Michael O’Keefe, Tim Robinson, Penny Schenkel and Jenny Garrett for their excellent organisation with the start and finish, and also to Keith Fenwick, Martin Jacob and Jim Brown for their photography on the day.

In handicap races it’s not the fastest runners who win but the best improvers.  The predicted slower runners start first followed at intervals by others based on recent performances.

Subbing at Carver Barracks.  Remembrance Half and 10K

Spartan JIM BROWN got under two hours at the Remembrance Half Marathon based at Carver Barracks near Saffron Walden on Saturday.

He said “Whoop.  Whoop.  I didn’t mess this one up.  I wanted to see if I could get under two hours this year despite all those birthdays.  This was my twelfth attempt in 2025 but I made it at the Remembrance Runs Half Marathon with 1:58:17.  A year’s best by 3:51 which gave me first man 70 plus and 69.55% – a four per cent leap on most other “bests” in 2025.  Gave myself a little pat on the head for the pace judging considering a few slopes and a bit of wind.  Sunny morning.  Conditions suited me.  Uncluttered course.  Loads of space.  Great.  5:36 per kilometre which is almost exactly nine minute miling.”

SIMON HAIGH was second man 55 plus with 1:45:21.  There were 110 finishers.

In the Remembrance 10K CRAIG BACON was first man 55 plus with 45 minutes exactly and NICK KLEANTHOUS got under one hour with 59:20.  There were 222 finishers.

Gower Trail Marathon

On Saturday new member Andy Shaw and Suzy Hawkins completed the Gower trail marathon.

Suzy said, “The first mile was on the beach, sand dunes, and through rivers, while the second mile took in 577 ft of elevation.  This set the tone for the rest of the day. With more than 4000 feet of climbing, knee deep mud, lots of sand and steps.  However, the sun was shining and the scenery stunning.  We ran together until mile 13 when sandy wet rucked up socks were making my feet incredibly painful, and I planned to withdraw from the race, Andy went on without me leaving me with family who came to support, one of who produced some clean dry socks and wet wipes, allowing me to continue.”

Andy finished 5 hours 11 minutes 49 seconds which gave him second in his age group.  Suzy followed him in 5 hours 18 min 27 seconds.  She was fourth female.

With only two men going under 4 hours and one woman going under 5 hours this was never going to be a PB course.  There were 98 finishers.

New York Marathon – Missed in Some Reports Due to Time Difference.

Paul Shelley reports.  We ran NYC Marathon!!  Alison and our daughter Molly ran an amazing race, running the whole thing together finishing in 4.29.18.  Molly had a 15 minute PB (personal best).  I ran in the Abbott world age group championship in 3.29.46, struggled from mile 21, it was brutal from there until Park Lane.  Proud to have collected two medals.  Crowds were fab and with our other daughter, Daisy, spectating made it very special.  It was let down by the bus queue in the morning one hour and getting through security, another hour which meant I nearly missed my wave.  But what an amazing experience.

Yuko Gordon beat four hours with 3:52:47.  She was fourth woman 70 plus.

She said she probably shouldn’t have run with her recent injuries (knee and Achilles), too soon after Berlin too, but too much to give away to withdraw so late, particularly all expenses spent were considerable, which are not refundable.

Nevertheless, she’s glad it’s over without dropping out.  Yuko said “It was a hell of a battle for me.  Marathon is a monster after all.  I need some rest before London.”

There were 59,000 finishers.

ANDREW SMASHES A NEW PERSONAL BEST!

Not content with running 1 hour 18 minutes 10 seconds in the Stevenage Half Marathon on 6th November just six days later ANDREW PATTERSON was running another half and this time he finished in just 1 hour 12 minutes 29 seconds to win the Remembrance Run Half Marathon race at Debden, near Saffron Walden on Saturday.  That’s a new personal best.

At the same venue STEVEN DOBNER ran a new personal best of 43 minutes 58 seconds in the 10K and DAVID PATTMAN was not far behind in 44:45.  In the 5K MASON SIMMONS was second man aged 20-29 in the 5K with 19 minutes 28 seconds.

Steven said, “It was a gorgeous morning over Saffron Walden for the Essex Remembrance 10k with a dry and pretty still day greeting us.

Dave and I set off with a target of getting close to or breaking 45 minutes.  After the first lap and feeling good I left Dave and pushed on.  Andrew Patterson flying past shouting encouragement on his way to winning the half marathon was perfectly timed and led to my fastest kilometre as I was dragged along in his wake.

A final push saw me dip under 44 minutes coming home in 43:58 for a new personal best, knocking three minutes off my previous best.  Dave came home in 44:45 for his season best.  A great event with a fantastic medal, hopefully more Spartans will make the relatively short trip over the county lines to support the event next year.”

33rd Masters Cross Country International Championships

The 33rd Masters Cross Country International Championship was held at Santry Demesne Park, Dublin on Saturday 12 November.  There were teams from England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Yuko Gordon led the England W70 (women 70 plus) Team to Silver medal.  Gold went to the home favourite Ireland.

FVS’s Yuko Gordon was fifth in W70 race which was very competitive.  All the top five finished within 40 seconds of each other.  Yuko won the title in 2018 but concentrating more on marathons and road races in recent years, was unable to take the cross country surface as well as she hoped.

Westport Sea 2 Summit (Mayo)

Spartan PAULA DUNNE was back in Ireland for her third Westport Sea2summit race.  She managed to knock 15 minutes off her PB (personal best).  Finishing in 2 hours 34 minutes Paula placed 521 out of 1600 people, and 118th female out of 723.  The race consisted of a 4k run; an 11k cycle; climb up Croagh Patrick mountain then fell run back down; an 8k cycle and finally another 4k run.

Paula enjoying what Ireland has to offer!

Parkrun – 12th November 2022

Nick GILL ran the Stevenage Parkrun course finishing seventh overall with a new PB time of 19 minutes and 41 seconds. Well done Nick!

YUKO A WINNER AT SAFFRON WALDEN

The Remembrance Runs were held at Debden Airfield near Saffron Walden around the perimeter of the airfield.  The airfield is in remote rural countryside in Essex and it was a challenging drive to get there.

The course was flat, mainly dry and the surface was concrete and tarmac.  Five Spartans joined the run, Jonathan Jones, Paul Shelley, David Pattman, Dzenana Topic and Yuko Gordon.

Yuko Gordon running the 5K finished first in her age category with 22 minutes 25 seconds  The other four Spartans ran the 10K.  Paul was sixth overall and second man 50 plus in 39 minutes 21 seconds.  David came in with 49:27, Jonathan 1:01:16 and Dzenana 1.04.55

The Stevenage Half is this Sunday, 21st November.

Escape From Meriden, the Centre of England

Spartan ADRIAN BUSOLINI has escaped from Meriden.  Starting from the stone cross in Meriden which marks the traditional centre of England, he was given a bright orange boiler suit, and 24 hours to ‘escape’ from Meriden – to get as far as one can, as the crow flies.  Adrian wound up at Heathrow Airport; quite a way short of his target, but nonetheless a novel self-supported run along a mix of roads, towpaths and trails for 100+ miles.  The canal sections were a highlight, along with various cries of “what the **** is he wearing” in Coventry city centre (the orange boiler suit was a hit!)

Adrian looking extremely happy in his boiler suit!

Alton Towers

FIONA, MATT, ETHAN and TALA CLARKE had a great family weekend at Alton Towers.  On Saturday they all did the 10K race.

The lead up to the race was a bit messy but once they got going it was a fun race, passing all the major attractions through the theme park.

The entry fee got them a medal, a t-shirt and park entry for the rest of the day.  Great value if like them you enjoy running and rollercoasters.  Best of all said Fiona it was easy to get the kids involved.

Someone recognised their Spartan vests and acknowledged that they were a long way from Stevenage.  It was lovely to get a shout out 130 miles from home.

Ethan and Tala both finished with new personals bests (PBs) – Tala with 57 minutes 40 seconds and Ethan with 1:06:59.  Tala was 619th and Matt 621st in 57:41.  Ethan was 1,107th and Fiona 1,110th in 1:07:03.  Fiona added it was so good to have this shared experience.

On Sunday Matt ran the half marathon in 1 hour 49 minutes 37 seconds and was 395th out of the 1,865 finishers.

Blesma 11K

CAROLYN LINSELL should have been running the BLESMA 11k Remembrance Day virtual event with NICOLA ANDERSSON.

However due to her little ‘misadventure’ last Sunday she could no longer take part.  KAREN ELLIS very kindly took her place and ran with Nicola.  Carolyn met them at the start for two minutes silence and to cheer them on.

Carolyn’s son pushed her in the wheelchair to the football ground side of the park and then she hobbled on her crutches all the way back to the start point.  The girls caught her right near the end so they finished together!

Well done ladies! Happy smiles all round and we wouldn’t expect to see anything less!

The Last Fly

The last Fly 5K in the current series will be the 80th on Saturday 20th November.  This virtual free run anywhere event on a Saturday morning helped to get a lot of people through lockdown when all in person events were cancelled.  More than 15,000 Fly 5K runs have been recorded since the series was launched.  There will be a Christmas edition and a real reunion in 2022.

In the penultimate and 79th Fly 5K JIM BROWN was second in his age group and 25th overall in 26 minutes 31 seconds; NICK KLEANTHOUS was just behind at 26th in 26:33 and NICOLA ANDERSSON 48th in 27:15.
