Fairlands Valley Spartans is primarily a road running club based in Stevenage, but our itinerary also includes track and off-road activities. We have around 400 members, and a team of over 20 coaches, several of whom have over twenty years experience. Originally formed in 1984 the Spartans were named the ‘UK’s Best Running Club’ by Runner’s World in 2010.
If you are new to running there is a very friendly Starter Group
The Spartans meet throughout the week to train, for more details see the Training page:
All sessions are fully supported by excellent coaches who are always on hand to offer advice and friendly support.
Friendliness is very much a theme for the Spartans who support a wide range of members with a variety of abilities. We cater for everyone, from those wishing to just run with others for company to those training to compete in various races over a range of distances. Many of our members regularly run the London Marathon and we organise a half-marathon each November around the traffic-free cycle tracks of Stevenage catering for around 1,000 runners, the proceeds of which go to local charities.
Each July, we arrange both an off-road challenge event with distance options from 12 miles to 50K, and a 3k relay event. We also organise a 5 mile and a 5K race each year.
The Spartans participate in a mid-week evening 10km league each summer and enjoy taking part in a Sunday morning cross country league over the winter months.
We also play an active role in organising and supporting major mass participation events in Stevenage. In the summercwe support the Race for Life which sees around 2,000 local ladies run, walk, and enjoy a 5k through the Fairlands Valley, from which the Club takes its name. A huge sum is raised for Cancer Charities and many local ladies feel a real sense of achievement from taking part. In November we organise the Stevenage Half Marathon which raises funds for both local organisations that help with the race and for the club’s charity of the year.
Running is only a part of the story at Fairlands Valley Spartans where the focus is on participation and fun, as well as on excellence. We organise various social events throughout the year including our annual dinner & dance presentation evening, Christmas celebrations, and anything else we can find an excuse to celebrate we do!
Of course we are very proud of the achievements of all our members who are encouraged to set their own personal goals on an annual basis, and then helped on an individual basis to achieve them. Many have surprised even themselves by winning medals at County and Regional levels – others are regular winners at such events.
We continue to thrive and compete and, most of all, enjoy our running. We are always keen to welcome new members of whatever age (our current membership ranges from teenagers through to two active members who are 75 years young!), gender, shape, size or ability. For fitness, fun, health and competition, Fairlands Valley Spartans provides a friendly, supportive environment for all.

The sessions are informal and fun, participants can do as much or as little as they wish, through a combination of running and walking. There is always a minimum of two coaches or experienced runners present at each session to provide advice and encouragement.
Due to the popularity of theStarter Group we meet throughout the year and in all weathers.

More information on the Starter Group can be found here
All club sessions are operating under the Covid-Secure guidelines from England Athletics. This means changes to the normal meeting places that are described on this and the relevent pages related to each of the sessions.
From November, Development Sessions are added back to the weekly schedule on Thursday. Therefore all sessions referred to in the list below are now back in operation with the exception of Sunday runs.
For Sunday runs we taken the view for now that the freedom of the smaller informal groups of six that have formed during Covid to run where they like is preferable to a more restricted set of risk-assessed routes that would be necessary for organised larger groups. If you would like to find a small group of club runners of similar pace to run with on a longer weekend run, please post in the Facebook group.
All organised club sessions must be booked by members. For sessions starting 1st November this is via the club’s session booking tool.
The tool is restricted to club members only. Anybody who is interested in joining the club is welcome to contact the Membership Secretary who will be happy to book them on to a session to “give it a try” before deciding whether to join the club. Please email email@example.com
We have a large coaching team who have a wide range of running and technical abilities so we can fully support our runners. Members of our coaching team will be present at all sessions. You can recognise them in their bright orange vests with their names on the front. Our Head Coach and the members of the coaching team draw up a regular training programme, which is published in advance. This assists in planning your own training around that of the club.
