Fairlands Valley’s ANDREW PATTERSON won Sunday’s Hitchin 10K with a time of just 33 minutes 36 seconds! He was more than a minute clear of the next runner with a new personal best and course record.
In addition on a super Spartans Sunday CHARLOTTE SMITH was first female senior with 46:50; PAUL SHELLEY was first male 50 plus with 40:16; ALISON SHELLEY first female 50 plus with 50:30; BRIAN WHITE was second male 60 plus with 41:55; and WILLIAM MORLEY was third male under 20 with 45:07. That’s four Spartans first places, a second and a third! GEORGIE HOOPER ran a new personal best (PB), less than a week after her last one, of 46:08; STEVE DOBNER improved to 47:36 and MARIAN MORLEY ran a new PB of 54:23.
Paul and Alison said they enjoyed the course despite the hill at about 3.5 kilometres and a nicely organised event with great marshalling. It was really good to race again and with the camaraderie of the Spartans.
There were 21 Spartans amongst the 348 finishers in the race. Find all their results in the table near the end of this release.
The race was another opportunity to record a time for race one in the Mid Week League and some Spartans achieved improvements compared with Tuesday (see below). They were Andrew Patterson (37 seconds); Brian White (1:20); PETE SMITH (12 seconds); William Morley (1:35); Georgie Hooper (33 seconds); Charlotte Smith (2:53); JIM BROWN (2:50); NICOLA ANDERSSON (1:16); NICK KLEANTHOUS (21 seconds); MARIAN MORLEY (13 seconds); KARL SHREEVE (41 seconds) and JONATHAN JONES (3:49).

Wave 10K
This year’s Mid Week Road Race League (MWRRL) has started without clubs travelling to fixtures but staying in their home areas. Fairlands Valley Spartans offered a secure waved start on a measured course and 81 took up the challenge on Tuesday. Despite the event finishing in the rain there were outstanding performances from SIMON JACKSON (34:08); ANDREW PATTERSON (34:13) and ADRIAN BUSOLINI (36:37) who was running just three days after a 44 miles ultra event.
NICK GILL improved his personal best by 25 seconds to 41:41. GEORGIE HOOPER by a full 2 minutes 30 seconds to 46:41. HEATHER JONES set a new mark of 47 minutes 47 seconds and VICKY ARCHER was left speechless by her new personal best of 54:36.

London to Brighton
Spartan JOHN HARRIS ran from London to Brighton in 12 hours 41 minutes and 8 seconds. This was 64 miles on a very challenging course with elevations over 5,100 feet in the hot sun on Saturday.
Racing Round England
The Spartans have a winner in their Bristol to Bristol virtual run, cycle and walk challenge around the coasts and borders of England. PENNY SCHENKEL crossed the finish line during the Spartans Wave 10K run on Tuesday with all 2,970 kilometres done.
She was 434 kilometres ahead of JIM BROWN (2536) and 789 ahead of BRIAN WHITE (2181).
By the end of the month Jim had reached Leominster, Herefordshire with 2664 and Brian was in Maryport, Cumbria with 2212. The only other Spartan with over 2,000 kilometres so far was SHARON CROWLEY with 2050. She has done the left turn in Northumberland and is heading towards Hadrian’s Wall. The other ten Spartans are still chasing around England and so far have a team total of 22,875.7 kilometres.
This virtual event was another great distraction and motivation during the months of restrictions on racing and training together. It started in Bristol and followed the coasts and borders of England in an anti-clockwise direction. Many other clubs are participating in the Virtual Coast Challenge.
Fly 5K Number 54
Four Spartans raced in Saturday morning’s Fly 5K, the 54th running of the virtual event.
NICOLA ANDERSSON led the Spartans in with a new personal best of 25 minutes 46 seconds. In the middle of a very active week JIM BROWN backed off a bit to take 28:19 but was still second in his age group. PENNY SCHENKEL ran 31:52 and PAUL HOLGATE 32:12.
The Saturday morning virtual Fly races started during the first lock down to help keep people active.
(Not) Parkrun
In addition to those using the same effort to record Fly 5K times on Saturday NICK KLEANTHOUS ran a (not) Parkrun on Tuesday in 26:32 and JIM BROWN went faster on Sunday with 24:59 in the second half of his 10K.
(Not) Parkruns can be run on any day of the week.
