EDINBURGH ROCKS TO THE SPARTAN BEAT

An incredible 45 Spartans were in Scotland to run in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival.

Much kinder conditions than the recent London and Milton Keynes Marathons, a great course and effective preparation with the Spartans coaching team and training groups helped many to achieve fantastic new personal bests.

Three Spartans beat three hours in the full marathon.  SIMON JACKSON took 52 seconds off his personal best to come 65th out of the 7,664 finishers (top 1%) in 2 hours 50 minutes 49 seconds; less than two minutes later in came STEFFAN FORD, also top 1%, in 75th place with a new PB of 2 hours 52 minutes 35 seconds – a whopping 6 minutes 9 seconds improvement for a runner who was already sub 3.  DAVID RIDDELL completed the sub three trip with 2 hours 57 minutes 44 seconds.

STUART ARCHER chalked up the biggest marathon PB with 12 minutes 14 seconds, for 3:18:20 with VICTORIA BRETT not far behind with an 11:33 PB for 4:43:18.  KAREN PALMER 4:23:33 (9:51 improvement) and JAN FRY 5:02:19 (6:12 improvement) also ran new PBs.

KAREN PALMER was buzzing “I only blooming did it new marathon PB at Edinburgh 4.23.33.  I nearly deafened myself ringing the PB bell.  Fantastic being with such a great group of super Spartans today. So lucky to belong to such a great running club.”

STEFFAN FORD said, “SIMON JACKSON and myself raced Edinburgh Marathon.  On an overcast morning with some strong coastal winds it made a change from the recent hot weather I experienced at London and was 20 minutes quicker.  We both smashed our Marathon PBs in achieving a top 100 finish.”

18 of the 7,664 finishers were Spartans.

27 of the 10,531 finishers were Spartans.

Spartan press officer JIM BROWN commented “45 Spartans crossed the border by train and plane to race round Edinburgh and East Lothian.  What a great weekend and achievement for Fairlands Valley Spartans from Stevenage!  In just one week the club notched nearly 140 different race results from experienced Spartans encouraging Starters round their first Mid Week League race to some spectacular performances in Scotland and winning in the British Masters Mile.”

Massive 63 Spartans at the St Albans Mid Week League Race

42 SPARTANS IN HANDICAP 5K

There was a superb turn out of 42 Fairlands Valley Spartans for Thursday evening’s Handicap 5K in Stevenage.  The club handicap events are a great opportunity for new runners to try a race against the clock without the need to travel and knowing there’s no danger of being off the back.

First across the finish line and winner on the night was KAREN BROOM in a year best (YB) time of 30:31, 4:59 ahead of handicap, closely followed by husband TREVOR BROOM in a new personal best (PB) time of 30:36.  ANDY SMITH was second man, third overall in a new PB of 22:35, while second lady (4th overall) was WENDY THARANI recording a 5k PB time of 24:03.  CALLIE CHAPMAN finished third lady in fifth position with a YB time of 27:21 and new member MEGAN McROTTY was 4th lady (6th) in 26:59, ahead of 3rd man PAUL ROBERTSON (7th) who improved his PB by 37 seconds to 19:30.

May Handicap 2

Fastest runner was STEFFAN FORD with 17:46, with ADRIAN BUSOLINI second quickest in a new PB time of 19:14, and PAUL ROBERTSON’s 19:30 3rd fastest.  Quickest lady was CLAIRE EMMERSON in a new PB of 22:09, with YUKO GORDON second quickest in a YB time of 22:37 and WENDY THARANI third fastest with her 24:03.

There was also PBs for JENNY GARRETT (24:56), ANGIE KEELING (28:39), WAYNE McMILLAN (29:43), NIKI PLUMB (33:18) and newcomers CHLOE PHILLIPS (29:19), NICOLA HATHERLY (33:18), JOHN ADAMSON (22:31) and ANNIE LOVATT (28:35).

LIZ CARVELL, ADRIAN DONNELLY, KAREN PALMER, BERNADETTE MILLWOOD and SARAH SAPSTEAD all recorded season bests (SB) – best time since 1st January 2017, and there were also year best times for ZOE JACKSON, NEAL MUGGLETON, JON SYPULA, SAM SIMMONS, CRAIG BACON, TIM SABAN, ROBERT SHAW, SUE HAMER, SIMON SYPULA, CLIVE CANNON, SALLY PHILLIPS, KERSTIN WEINER and KARL SHREEVE.

In handicap races runners start in order, slowest first, at times determined by their recent performances.  If everyone runs to form they will all finish together, so the winner will be the best improver.  Next handicap 5k is scheduled for Thursday 5th July.

Buckingham

ADRIAN BUSOLINI was seventh in the Buckingham Half Marathon with 1 hour 27 minutes 57 seconds.  There were 378 finishers.  He said “This was only the second year of the Buckingham Half Marathon, but with such faultless race day organisation you’d be hard pressed to tell.  The course can best be described as peaceful; wholly on country lanes, only briefly passing through a few local villages, and featuring less than 400 runners. It’s gently undulating throughout, with fantastic marshalling, support, an incredible range of cakes at the finish, and a distinctive purple medal to boot.  Both parking and facilities were good.

I’d recommend this one for the race calendar next year.”

One Second Short

GRANT RAMSAY took part in the 3000 metres steeplechase in Watford and finished third out of nine, in a time of 11:01.  That’s only one second out from getting into the UK rankings.  However the result was still a season’s best by a massive 43 seconds.

Windermere Marathon

ERICA GRAYSON ran the hilly Windermere Marathon in 4 hours 36 minutes 44 seconds.

She said “I’m a little tired now, it was a five hour journey back but worth it after an amazing event.  I travelled to the Lake District to run the UK’s most beautiful marathon.  It started and finished at Brathay Hall on the edge of Lake Windermere.”

Paras 10

Jo and Rufus were second canicrosser in the Paras 10 mile race at Colchester on Sunday.  JO BOWDERY ran a new personal best of 1 hour 21 minutes 30 seconds, an improvement of four minutes, and RUFUS is her dog.  Jo was third female overall.

They had a great day out and raised money for the paratroopers.

CAROLINE CROFT was at the same event and said it was a scorcher of a day and a well organised event.  She finished in 1 hour 40 minutes.

SPARTAN 1,2,1 IN HITCHIN 56 IN MWL STAMPEDE

More than 120 Spartan race results this week!

It was like a Spartan Stampede as 56 club members charged round the first Mid Week League race of the season on Thursday, but it wasn’t only runners as like a scene from Rawhide several middle distance cows joined in the race at one point.  ISABEL GREEN reported the Longhorns were going the same speed as her.

The 9.65 kilometres course in Epping Forest was very hilly and partly off road.  Some runners were reduced to a walk the second time up Strawberry Hill but DAN McALPINE flew round the six miles to be the fastest Spartan and 16th overall in just 34 minutes 30 seconds.

The next Spartan in was SIMON JACKSON who improved his previous time by 16 seconds to finish 24th in 35:22.  Ten more Spartans finished in the next seven minutes – STEFFAN FORD 28th in 35:42; KEITH COUGHLIN 39th in 36:10; RICHARD SPRINGALL 57th in 37:43; TODD GRAY 61st in 37:52; JENNY PENNELL 71st in 38:42; STUART ARCHER 78th in 39:14; DANNY SCANLON 94th in 40:27; TIM SABAN 97th in 40:46; DEAN CARPENTER 105th in 41:15 and NICK GILL 126th in 42:15.

MICHELLE REEVES led in a strong contingent of Spartan women.  She was 151st overall, 22nd woman, in 43 minutes 20 seconds.  Seven more females from Fairlands came in within eight minutes.  They were Ashley SCHOENWETTER (44:05); Ruth REILLY (44:27); Claire EMMERSON (45:07); Isabel GREEN (47:00); Joanne BOWDERY (49:06); Kelly EVANS (51:09) and Jenny GARRETT (51:19).

The other side of Chingford in time for a 7.30p.m. start after work was a real challenge for many Spartans and it was great to see so many made it.  The next league race will be in St Albans on Thursday 24th May.

(All 56 Spartan results can be found at the very end of this release)

Hitchin 10K

It was a Spartans 1,2 at the first annual Hitchin 10k and first place for the ladies too!  CALLUM STEWART won in 33 minutes 58 seconds with DAN McALPINE second in 35:18.  NATALIE LAWRENCE won the women’s race in 39 minutes 54 seconds.  They were all first in their category but those prizes went elsewhere as they were awarded the podium prizes.

Eighteen Spartans took part.  TREVOR BROOM was over the moon to finish in 1:02:57  which gave him a 16 minute personal best (PB).  A great training run for his first half marathon in Edinburgh in two weeks.

Spartans at the Hitchin 10k were as below.

Fifteen Spartans had a great time at the Greenway Challenge Half Marathon on Sunday morning.  After three finishers under two hours many arrived in two stripy waves.  ANDY PATTERSON was fourth in 1 hour 17 minutes 57 seconds; TOM SAUKA 31st in 1:40:27 and JIM BROWN 88th in 1:52:56.  The first Spartan wave was ISABEL GREEN 156th in 2:05:00; TIM ROBINSON 157th in 2:05:08; PAUL WHYTE 158th also in 2:05:08; and SOPH GEORGIOU 166th in 2:05:23.  A Spartan super seven were enjoying a social training run including a scramble for sweeties by one of the Spartan volunteer marshals with about two miles to go.  They were CLAIRE EMMERSON 227th in 2:21:45; club chair SOPHIE COWAN 228th in 2:21:45; SUE HAMER 229th in 2:21:46; HAYLEY YENDELL 230th in 2:21:46; ROBERT WRIGHT 231st in 2:21:46; JENNY GARRETT 232nd in 2:21:47 and JULIE SHADBOLT in 2:21:47.  VICKY COTTOM came in soon afterwards with 2:27:43.

Last May Michael Andrews and his wife to be Aimee ran the Silverstone 10K as their first race in their preparation for the Disney Marathon that they completed this January. Michael completed the 10k in 1:04:22 and Aimee ran round with her dad Paul Holgate in 1:12:48.  One year on the three returned to Silverstone where Mick improved his time by 10:04 to 54:18 and Aimee & Paul knocked 6:38 off Aimee’s time to 1:06:10 setting them all up very nicely ready for the ‘Castle to the Chateau’ challenge that they have entered in Disneyland Paris this September.

Michael Andrews 1008th in 54:18; Aimee Andrews 1496th in 1:06:10 and Paul Holgate 1497th also in 1:06:10.  There were 1657 finishers.

Gatwick Half Marathon

It was the Gatwick Half Marathon on Sunday for NICOLA FINNEGAN.  She said it was a fair way off her PB at 2:44:17 and not the time that I wanted, but after a week of encouragement from FVS this week, she had a really pleasant run and was ok with it.  Nice medal, selfie at every mile marker and high fives from Susie Chan, Sally Gunnell and Colin Jackson as she crossed the start!

Shakespeare Marathon

In his fifth race of the week, Spartan Paul Holgate was pleased to take 12 minutes off his 2017 time at the Shakespeare Marathon in Stratford upon Avon to finish in 5:14:15 – his fastest marathon since November 2014.

Another Spartan also running his 5th race of the week was Michael Andrews completing the Marlow 5 miles in 40:45.

EMAC Win

The Spartan women’s team started their defence of their Eastern Masters Track and Field League title by winning their home match at Ridlins Wood Stadium in Stevenage against Marshall Milton Keynes AC, Cambridge & Coleridge AC, Bedford & County AC, Biggleswade AC, Bedford Harriers and Luton AC.

The team of Monica Brown, Christine Lathwell, Alison Wood, Stephanie Mayfield, Sharon Crowley, Iris Hornsey, Andrea Westcott, Yuko Gordon and Tessa Stephenson had nine wins between them.  The highlight being the 4x100m relay team for 50 to 59 year olds which saw Monica, Alison, Sharon and Tessa set a new league record by nearly two seconds.

Meanwhile, the men’s team comprised of Mark Freeman, Steve Mayfield, Dave Stephenson, Richard Bruce, Chris Westcott, Anton McCalla, Ciaran Mcanery, Peter Smith, John Harris, Barry Osborne and Paul Holgate finished second in their match whilst managing to cover all the events in the evening for the first time, which was a great advantage against the other teams.

Richard Bruce won the men’s 35- 49 year age group 400 metres race in 55.5 seconds.  Barry Osborne won the men’s 60 plus 3000 metre race in 11 minutes, 33.6 seconds and the men’s younger team of 35 to 49 year olds, Richard, Anton, Ciaran and Chris, won their relay in great style.

The next League match is at Bedford International Stadium on Wednesday 6 June

Prague Marathon

DUNCAN FLOUNDERS ran a very hot, very humid and very uneven (cobbles everywhere!!) Prague Marathon on Sunday.  He finished in 4:01:34.

Wings for Life

On Sunday CAROLE SHELDRICK and CAROLINE CROFT went to Cambridge to run the Wings for Life World Run, where everyone around the world sets off at the same time and 30 minutes later a chaser car sets off to catch you.  They said the race started at midday and was incredibly hot and an amazing day.

Carole managed to complete 9 miles before being caught and Caroline 6 miles.

On Monday Carole and Caroline took a trip back to Cassiobury Park in Watford to do the Kelly’s 10K.  Many Spartans know most the route and know it’s got a few hills and on such a hot day they wasn’t a huge amount of fun.  But apart from the hills it was a brilliant race and very well organised.

Carole Sheldrick finished in 1 hour 9 seconds and Caroline Croft in 1:04:28.

And if it wasn’t for the gates coming down at the train crossing and having to wait for the mini train to go past Carol would of finished under the hour.  They finished the day with their usual Mr Whippy and a paddle in the river

Milton Keynes Festival of Running

No Wombles last week but the Spartans found some Milton Keynes cows this week during the Milton Keynes Festival of Running.

The heat was unforgiving hitting 26 degrees in what little shade there was for half and marathon runners.

Support from spectators, Marshalls and the running community was amazing all pulling together to get as many runners home safe.

Tim Saban ran the half starting his training for Berlin Marathon in an amazing time of 1:39:56 just slightly off his planned pace.

Erica Grayson came home in 2:11:56 her last long run in preparation for the Windermere Marathon her second marathon of the year.

Emma Martin said “I was so pleased to see Tim and Erica cheering me into the stadium. Really tough in the heat but pleased to have finished uninjured even if it was much slower than planned!”  She came in with 4:03:26.

SIMON JACKSON came in with 1:33:01 and SAM SIMMONS with 2:33:59.

GRANT RAMSAY was the 3 hour pacer for the marathon.  He ran the last 10 miles alone and suffered in the heat but managed to keep in target coming home in 3:05 just two weeks after the London Marathon.

Tim Robinson entered the Milton Keynes marathon in an attempt to lay the demons to rest following a very hot day in Paris earlier this year where he failed to make a decent time. However, picking the hottest early bank holiday on record to do this proved not to be the wisest of choices.  Mile 7 saw a walk/run strategy employed to manage the heat and the last 12 miles were a tough battle against the heat and a search for shade as the midday sun set in.  A last minute 600m sprint once in the stadium bought him in just under 6 hours with 5:59:34.

Stuart Haycroft took part in the Milton Keynes festival of racing, completing both the MK Rocket 5k on the Sunday and the Marathon on Monday.

Despite being very warm, Stuart ran 17:47 in the rocket, improving his 5km PB by just over a minute..

On a hot Monday bank holiday, Stuart completed the marathon in 3:47:35.

Adrian Busolini ran the MK marathon in 4:39:59 and Kartik Sharma in 6:10:21.

Same Again At Langcroft

On Sunday Danny Sutton and Verity Fisher ran the Langtoft 10km.  Although hot they both paced well and were pleased with their times.  Verity finished with EXACTLY the same time as last year, 49:37; and Danny with 47:33.

Thames Towpath

JOHN NELMS completed 81 miles in the Richmond – Oxford event along the Thames towpath.
