Despite winter returning with a vengeance, five Spartans braved the snow and biting wind in the Daffodil Dawdle off-road marathon, just outside Newmarket in Suffolk. Knee deep in snow, calf deep in icy water and ankle deep in very slippery mud, the run felt more like a 40 mile event, rather than the 26.7 measured miles.

Increased participation helped Fairlands Valley Spartans achieved their best place so far in the Sunday Cross Country League.
The club won the women's B team competition. Over the whole series the Spartan women were seventh out of seventeen clubs and the club’s men were ninth.
Another packed week of training activities at the club! REMEMBER - it's the final XC league fixture and the club are having one of it's best seasons for many years. We have a number of runners in contention for league trophies/medals. Lets get out and put the club in the best possible league position!
55 Spartans braved Sunday morning's cold and miserable weather to take part in the Bryan Moore Shield Handicap 10 mile and associated five mile events.
TODD GRAY won the shield by smashing his ten mile personal best (PB) by almost 3 minutes to cross the line in an excellent 64 minutes 49 seconds, almost 10 minutes quicker than handicap!

Fairlands Valley Spartans ladies showed the men the way in Sunday’s Hertfordshire Cross Country Championships which were held on a hard, hilly and very muddy course at Haileybury College, Hertford.

As always Sunday’s Buntingford Ten was hilly but this year it was crisp and sunny rather than dull and icy. Thirty Spartans competed in the ten miles event. In addition, there was a victory in the Boxing Day run at Pirton.
As well as the 10 of the best for the coming month, there is a reminder about booking your races, what the forthcoming Cooper Test is all about, coaching resources on marathon and half marathon training and a reminder about groupings for our Tuesday sessions.

We have been notified by the Parks division that there are serious drainage and water issues at Ridlins at the moment. As a result, we will be meeting in the small car park off of Fairlands Way (by the maze) and then using sections of the nearby cycleways.

As part of the Paul Maguire 5 mile race on Sunday 23rd September, there was a competiton for the Paul Maguire trophy. The trophy is awarded to the Spartan who beats their 5 mile target time by the largest margin.
